Civil society is increasingly coming under pressure. Its presence in the public sphere, its political role, and even some forms of public funding are being called into question. At the same time, its actors – including many small and large foundations – see themselves as advocates of democratic culture and as supporters of social cohesion.

What contribution can and should civil society organizations and foundations make to democracy today? Where do they meaningfully complement state action? Where do they help shape political discourse – and where might they be overestimating their role and influence?

In times of growing social polarization, it is crucial to reflect on established roles and rules, and to explore new forms of dialogue and cooperation. The Association of German Foundations invites you to join a collective conversation on the evolving relationship between foundations, civil society, and the state.
