On TikTok and Instagram, children and teenagers are confronted with unrealistic beauty ideals: many faces are manipulated—whether through camera filters, cosmetics and makeup, fillers, or surgeries. Do underage digital natives have the necessary media literacy to recognize this? In this casual workshop, we dive into everyday social media imagery and try to decode it together. Because if it’s all made up, why should kids be influenced or unsettled by it?

The workshop is led by Rabea Weihser, former culture editor of ZEIT ONLINE. Her book on the topic of “Beauty Pressure & Media,” titled How We Became So Beautiful: A Biography of the Face (Diogenes), has just been released and was celebrated Premiere at Publix.

Recommended age: 12–17 years
The workshop is explicitly aimed at children and teenagers of all genders.
