"Inside Gaza" - Film screening and talk

For journalists, Gaza is one of the most dangerous places in the world. Since international media have no access to the area, Palestinian media workers are their eyes and ears in Gaza. But they too have lost family members, their homes, and their former lives as a result of attacks by the Israeli army. Since October 7, 2023, over 210 Palestinian journalists have been killed in attacks, at least 56 of them in direct connection with their work.

The film “Inside Gaza” by Hélène Lam Trong shows the daily reality of journalism in Gaza from the perspective of four journalists from Agence France-Presse (AFP), one of the world's largest news agencies. Even for these experienced professionals, it is an exceptional situation: With the Gaza Strip closed to the international press, they bear sole responsibility for reporting on Israel's war in Gaza – as witnesses, but also, as they soon discover, as its targets. Among them are Mai Yaghi, Adel al-Zaanoun, Mohammed Abed, and Mahmud Hams.

The documentary offers unique insights, compiled from unpublished videos, snapshots, and conversations from after their evacuation.

How to report in the face of accusations and attacks?
How to deal with fear, stress, and grief?
And how to carry on in the midst of tragedy?

Reporters Without Borders discusses this with Mohammed Abed, one of the protagonists of the film and the longest-serving AFP employee in Gaza. The photo journalist has been working for the agency for 23 years, has reported on numerous wars, crises, and the Arab uprisings, and was awarded the World Press Photo Award in 2010 for his work in Gaza. Since leaving the Gaza Strip in March 2024, he has been living in Cairo, where he coordinates AFP freelancers in Gaza.

The discussion will be moderated by Christopher Resch, press spokesman for the Middle East at Reporters Without Borders in Berlin.
