Three years ago, Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini died in police custody in Tehran at the age of just 22. Her death sparked outrage against the regime and ignited the largest feminist protest movement in history – both in Iran and within the Iranian diaspora – under the slogan of the Kurdish women’s movement: “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (“Woman, Life, Freedom”).
The new podcast by ACB Stories – produced for SWR and funk – explores how these protests have transformed people’s lives. In six episodes, host Aida Amini tells the story of her mother, who emigrated from Iran to Germany in the mid-1990s in search of freedom and a safer future for her daughters. But the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” protests spark a personal revolution – for both mother and daughter. And when Israel attacks Iran in June 2025, everything shifts once again.
On this evening, we’ll listen to excerpts from the first episode and talk with Aida Amini (host) and Dena Zarrin (editor) about how the series came together, the stories behind it, the current situation in Iran, and the challenges facing the Iranian diaspora. The audience is warmly invited to ask questions and join the discussion.
