Reporting the Machines - (Mis)Understanding Digital Sovereignty

Few concepts have shaped the digital policy debate as profoundly as “digital sovereignty.” Only in June, the European Commission made reducing critical digital dependencies a European priority with its European Technological Sovereignty Package. 

Yet the more frequently the term is used, the more pressing the questions becomes: What does “digital sovereignty” actually mean? What detemines wheter it can be achieved, and who are the key actors responsible?   

Through its “Reporting the Machines” conference series, Publix brings together journalists, researchers, experts from civil society and politics, AI developers, and start-up founders. This year, we want to jointly examine and deconstruct the misconceptions surrounding the sovereignty debate and discuss the role of journalism in exposing dependencies and providing context for the wider public debate.  

Funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the conference take place as part of the Publix Tech-Journalism-Fellowship and in cooperation with 1014 Deutschland.
