Despite scandals, the AfD achieved top results in this year's European elections. Long before the state elections in Brandenburg, Thuringia and Saxony, forecasts put the AfD in first place. Now, for the first time in the history of the Federal Republic, a far-right party has won a state election. How should our democracy react to a party that divides people into first and second class citizens and whose members discussed plans to expel millions of people from Germany in Potsdam?
Extremist parties are gaining strength across Europe. The conflict between Russia and the EU is coming to a head. Political developments in the USA are jeopardizing the transatlantic alliance and Europe's security. Where will Russia's war end if Trump wins the election and imposes his “America first” maxim? What will happen to our freedom if the extremists of the AfD or Wagenknecht's BSW break with the West?
One day after the state elections in Brandenburg, CORRECTIV reporters Marcus Bensmann and Sebastian Haupt assess the results of the elections in the east and want to discuss with the audience how our democracy can be saved. Bensmann has been researching the AfD for almost ten years and has written several books about the party. He was also part of the core team for our Potsdam research. The evening will be moderated by Sophie Timmermann.
