Publix: House for Journalism and the Public Sphere

Journalists have an important role to play in democracy: to provide all citizens with reliable information, introduce new perspectives and encourage people to form their own opinions. But journalism is under pressure - from technological upheaval, economic uncertainty, political attacks and the disappearance of local media. Publix provides targeted impetus to counteract these developments and ensure a strong, diverse media landscape.

In a world full of content and information, people need guidance. Our programme helps people to classify media content, identify misinformation and become more aware of their own media use. At the same time, we create spaces for personal discussions and dialogue beyond algorithms and screens. We want everyone to be able to have their say: including people and perspectives that have historically hardly been heard.

Publix brings together civil society organisations and initiatives that strengthen journalism, advocate for social cohesion and educate people about digital media. We create spaces for cross-sector exchange, experimentation and productive collaboration. Through workshops and events, we communicate the value of civil society’s work to citizens, businesses and politicians. We are convinced that we can only meet the current challenges facing the media landscape and democratic coexistence with a strong civil society.
