In her new book on the politics of division and polarization in Germany, renowned journalist and author Gilda Sahebi dispels common myths and fake facts. When looking at German society, the focus is increasingly on stories of drama, conflict and division. Gilda Sahebi, however, counters these narratives by pointing out that they are often politically generated and reinforced by the media. In her book, she exposes them as lies, as an instrument of domination by authoritarian forces - using the relevant debates on social benefits, migration, gender and wokeness, war and peace and coronavirus.
After all, studies show time and again that people are much happier in their own lives; they help and support each other and seek connection, not hatred. In conversation with Publix director Maria Exner, Gilda Sahebi elaborates on this insight. Together, they explore the question of where the search for connection has been lost on a social level and what can be done to avoid giving the narrative of division space in one's own life.
The event takes place in German.
