Disinformation poses a threat to democratic societies worldwide. On social media, propaganda, half-truths, and AI-manipulated content spread rapidly, amplified by platform algorithms. This makes it all the more important for young people to learn early on how to critically assess information, evaluate sources, and understand journalistic standards. Schools play a key role in this – yet the German education system is still falling short of this task.
As part of the #PressFreedomGoesToSchool initiative marking World Press Freedom Day, the focus is on why and how news literacy must be firmly embedded in the curriculum. The discussion is based on the position paper “Fighting Disinformation” by Journalismus macht Schule, which highlights how other countries are addressing this issue.
The event will be held in German.
