Modern-day authoritarianism differs significantly from earlier forms. Democracy has eroded, eaving in its place what are often called "hybrid" regimes: these regimes make use of elements of democratic systems, such as elections, opposition parties, or an independent press. However, what remains of these democratic institutions often has no influence or power, as the central authority is geared toward comprehensive control.
The event will address the question of how much American democracy has already suffered and in which areas it remains healthy and vibrant. What moments or milestones can societies use to restore, revitalize, or even rebuild democracies within and beyond their borders? This evening will draw lessons from the political developments of recent years, as the public on both sides of the Atlantic faces increasing threats to democracy.
Andrew Marantz (The New Yorker) and Joshua Yaffa (Bard College Berlin, The New Yorker) will lead the discussion.
