At a time when unrestrained speech and deliberate disinformation dominate public discourse, journalism bears a great responsibility. But what does that mean in concrete terms? What does good journalism look like in a media world between mainstream media, social feeds, and podcast microphones? This edition of Let's Talk seeks answers at the intersection of journalistic and lyrical writing. After all, poetry can also take a stand and transform language into a form of resistance. Together with The Poetry Project, a literary dialogue project for young people with a history of displacement, we talk about language as a space for experience, memory, and encounter. How can poems make the unspeakable speakable? And what can journalism learn from this?
Zainab Farahmand studied Persian language and literature at the University of Kabul. In 2018, she was named “Afghanistan's Best Reporter in Literary Reportage.” She has been living in Berlin since 2022 and writes as a journalist and author on topics related to origin, loss, and new beginnings.
Elona Beqiraj lives in Berlin and works as an author, curator, and political educator with a focus on migration, memory, and identity. In her poetry collection “und wir kamen jeden sommer” (Resonar Verlag, 2019), she deals with the consequences of war and migration. Elona Beqiraj leads writing and art projects that deal with memory culture and anti-racist education, including at the Maxim Gorki Theater.
